Back to the Future: Schlitz in a Bottle Eick April 7, 2008 Beer 1 Comment Schlitz Beer, known to many as the cheap, shitty beer you pay $2 for when you don’t want to spend $5 at a bar on a Sam Adams, will once again bottle their beer, something they abandoned in the mid-90’s. “Schlitz: Beer for guys who eat ham & cheese sandwiches in their bathrobe.” You may find this hard to believe, but Schlitz used to be the world’s top-selling beer (no seriously, you read that right) and was the number 2 brewery in America as late as the 1970’s. In the 70’s, in an attempt to cut costs, Schlitz changed their formula, using more corn syrup and fewer hops, and warming up their fermentation process. Sales plummeted more than 40% by 1980, the stock collapsed and the company was sold off to Pabst Brewing Company.
