Review: New Snyder’s of Hanover Flavor Doubles Cheddar Cheese & Cracked Pepper Pretzel Pieces Junk Food Guy March 11, 2013 Junk Food, Reviews 2 Comments What up So Good Readers. Have you recovered from Springing Forward yet? I know that *I* have NOT. Man, I’m tired. But, there is no rest for those who eat junk food, so…ONWARD! Today I’m reviewing New Snyder’s of Hanover Flavor Doubles Cheddar Cheese & Cracked Pepper Pretzel Pieces! I did another Flavor Doubles variety over on my blog, Junkfoodguy.com – Buffalo Wing and Buttermilk Ranch. I…didn’t love those. Would this flavor be any different? New Snyder’s of Hanover Flavor Doubles Cheddar Cheese & Cracked Pepper Pretzel Pieces are really just a combination of two already pre-existing Snyder’s of Hanover flavors: Cheddar Cheese and Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper. In a lot of ways, you could think Snyder’s was getting sort of lazy – all they had to do here was make a new bag, and dump already made pieces into the same bag. On the other hand, this is a great way to trick consumers …er, like me…into buying something that isn’t really all that new. Hmmm. When I first saw these New Snyder’s of Hanover Flavor Doubles Cheddar Cheese & Cracked Pepper Pretzel Pieces, I was curious – why THIS combination. The Buffalo Wing and Buttermilk Ranch combination, I understood… people dip wings into ranch dressing! That’s reasonable. But this? Do people often sprinkle their cheddar cheese with black pepper? If you wanted to make an awesome combo, why not combine the Cheddar Cheese pieces with the Jalapeno pieces? (See, I should be running this campaign!) I am thankful that the black pepper flavor in this bag of New Snyder’s of Hanover Flavor Doubles Cheddar Cheese & Cracked Pepper Pretzel Pieces is actually being provided by black pepper itself. So what’re all these other ingredients doing here?? When I opened this bag of New Snyder’s of Hanover Flavor Doubles Cheddar Cheese & Cracked Pepper Pretzel Pieces, there was a VERY faint creamy smell. More present, however, was the STRONG black pepper smell – tickled my nose and felt semi-spicy. Excited, I dug in… …hmmm. Ok, here’s the deal with these New Snyder’s of Hanover Flavor Doubles Cheddar Cheese & Cracked Pepper Pretzel Pieces. Like my review of the Buffalo Wing/Buttermilk Ranch Flavor Doubles, I think the individual pieces were good, but the sum of all parts fell flat. Except, to be honest, I liked these even less than the Buffalo Wing combo. The pretzel pieces themselves were quality – pure Snyder’s of Hanover quality. Nice and crunchy, great doughy taste, nicely savory and salty. The cracked pepper pieces were VERY peppery. The pepper was embedded into each piece and the flavor was nice and peppery. Each piece had that wonderful black pepper flavor that almost tastes sort of sweet, sometimes. Very good. The cheese pieces? Fell flat. I haven’t had a bag of Cheddar Cheese Pretzel Pieces by themselves before, but the cheese flavor wasn’t very strong at all. I could taste a nice cheese taste…but it dissolved quickly and did not leave any meaningful imprint. Furthermore, some of the cheddar cheese pieces had black pepper embedded in them too! So they already tasted sort of peppery. Together? It was just a big ol pepper party, in my mouth, with a tiny bit of cheesy creaminess! Not what I expected, or wanted. Snyder’s has quality products, but I just felt like this combo was not successful. I’ll stick to eating the flavors alone, in their original bags, thanks. PURCHASED AT: Harris Teeter COST: $3.00. Two things – the Cheddar Cheese pieces are pretty delicious on their own. The cheese is mild, but a great silky-smooth rich snack. A safe choice. – “If you wanted to make an awesome combo, why not combine the Cheddar Cheese pieces with the Jalapeno pieces? (See, I should be running this campaign!)” We concur!!
