Tater Tot Casserole Recipe

It’s winter; a food coma is more than welcome. My belly craves gooey comfort food and hot apple cider. Enter tater tot casserole: a creamy, crispy, cheesy delight. A cheeseburger in a pan, if you will. It hits the salty, sweet, and savory spots all at once and it’s killer at a party.

When I dive in, I feel as if I’ve quelled my inner fat kid. My spoon crunches through the tater tot crust down to the hamburger and luscious sauce. The sounds make my mouth water and the aromatics permeate my kitchen. Saltiness complimented by juiciness is waiting to be scarfed down.

Creamy Sauce-Casserole

A helping of ketchup or your favorite hot sauce (I love Anchor Bar’s Hotter Buffalo Wing Sauce) can add some extra kick. A few important notes for consideration: I recommend using 93/7 lean beef because it has the right amount of juiciness and flavor, but doesn’t cause the tater tots to get soggy. As far as the tater tots go, I prefer using the Ore-Ida Extra Crispy Tater Tots for ideal crunch, but other brands will work as well. Additionally, I love using Campbell’s 98% fat free cream of chicken soup because it has the best mouth-taste, flavor, and consistency for this sauce.

Ingredients
  1. 1 lb ground beef, salt and pepper to taste
  2. ½ medium onion, chopped
  3. 1 tb Worcestershire sauce
  4. ½ cup sour cream
  5. 1 can condensed cream of chicken soup
  6. 32 oz or 4 cups of frozen tater tots
  7. 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (both mild and sharp work well)
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees
  2. Cook the beef in a non-stick skillet with about a tablespoon of olive oil. Add salt and pepper to your liking.
  3. Chop ½ of the medium onion and add to the beef when the beef is about 80% cooked
  4. While the beef and onion are cooking, mix the Worcestershire sauce, sour cream, and soup in a medium-sized bowl
  5. When the beef and onion are cooked, add them to the sauce mixture in the bowl and mix well
  6. Place the sauce, meat, and onion mixture in a glass baking dish. (I like using my 9”x 9” square glass pan but a rectangular glass pan or a one-time-use square foil pan will work too.)
  7. Top the mixture with frozen tater tots and bake for 30-40 minutes.
  8. When the tater tots are crisp, add the cheese to the top and return to the oven until the cheese is melted (about 5-7 minutes).
  9. Serve and, if you desire, add your favorite spicy topping and devour!

Try this recipe for a satisfying dip as well: switch the tater tots for hash browns and break the meat into smaller pieces. Whether it’s a dip or a dinner, tater tot casserole curbs your fried, cheesy cravings and warms your withered winter soul.

Thanks for the great tater tot recipe, I have always added the cheese under the tots or mixed it all together, I really liked this version because the tots were nice and crispy. Thanks
