Another great food trend sweeping the dessert aisles is birthday cake. From “remixes” to frostings to ice creams to cakes (sort of strange right?), this trend is delicious in all its forms (for a food trend recipe, check out this article). Instead of the typical vanilla cake, birthday cake recipes usually include yellow cake; vanilla cake’s tastier cousin. With colored dots for fun and flavor, the birthday cake recipe is just a little more jazz than regular cake. Recently, I stumbled upon birthday cake Oreos and knew I had to try them. They certainly did not disappoint. We wrote a post on chocolate Birthday Cake Oreos if you would like to read our review of that as well. What makes you buy a product? Packaging most of the time. When you pick up a box of birthday cake Oreos, the packaging screams frivolity and joy. There’s candles, there’s nice yellow packaging (both for your eyes to pick up and a hint to the yellow cake), there’s bright colors; something for everyone at the store. I can see how moms would find boxes of them sneakily put into their carts by small hands. Beyond the exciting packaging, which really did catch my eye in the store, the first pull of the tab to open the container is delightful. I couldn’t believe how strong the smell of the birthday cake was. It was as if I had just baked yellow cake in my oven. It was enticing and made the product seem extremely fresh. After the burst of flavor, I was a little dissatisfied that most of my Oreos were crumbled or broken and there were crumbs all over the place. Guess they must have gotten stomped on by one of the kids whose mom returned them to the shelves. I broke one open to see if they jazzed up their cream and you know what, they did! There were happy little flecks of color in the white cream of the Oreo just like all the other yellow cake treats. I was surprised; typically they don’t go to the effort to recreate every little piece of the design. They just infuse the cake, frosting, cookie, whatever with the flavor at hand. The yellow cookie with the colorful frosting was truly a great take on the birthday cake trend. But let’s talk about taste. Wow! Great job, Nabisco! I was impressed with both the quality of the cookie and the cream. It really tasted like I was eating a piece of birthday cake. The cookie added great vanilla flavor to the cream. And what was really excellent was that they didn’t just treat the cream as if it was the frosting and the cookie was the cake. The cream and cookie, even when eaten separately, both tasted like cake and frosting. It was truly a great, and surprising, dessert experience. I would certainly recommend picking up some of the birthday cake Oreos whether you’re heading to a party, just broke-up with your girlfriend, or want to treat yourself. They’re everything you want in the birthday cake trend and I’d even go so far as to say they’re better than many of the cake and cupcake mixes I’ve had. Pick them up at any local store but try to keep yourself from eating the entire container at your first sitting.
