What is the difference between water from the tap and filtered water? Mark Thompson November 5, 2016 Bizarre Everyone knows that it’s important to drink water on a regular basis in order to remain hydrated and healthy. You may not be so aware of the fact that it’s also important to make sure that the water you drink is safe. The best way to do this is to use some sort of water purification system such as an under sink water filter or a specially designed water bubbler. You may be wondering why you need to filter tap water to make sure it’s safe to drink. In this article, we are going to look at some of the impurities that may exist in tap water and why filtering your household water supply is such a good idea. Why is tap water often not healthy to drink? One of the most important things you need to know about water is that it’s a solvent. This means that substances can easily be dissolved in it. Once you know this you can see how easy it is for water to pick up all sorts of additives and chemicals as it travels through pipes to your home. It’s also worth remembering that chemicals such as chlorine and fluoride are added to water to eliminate potential bugs. While both of these additives have some benefits this does not make them totally healthy to drink. Taking all of this information into account you can see why it’s not normally a good idea to drink water straight from the tap. Let’s take a look at the difference that filtering water can make. How can filtering water help? Any water filtration system you have fitted in your home is aimed at purifying the water that comes from your tap, making it safe for you to drink. Impurities, odours and colour are removed from the water making it clean and fresh. Water purification comes in different forms; physical and chemical. Physical purification involved the use of a membrane through which water flows. The membrane catches any debris that is present in the water. Chemical filtration is used to remove impurities from the water, making it safe for you to drink. What about bottled water? You may be thinking that it’s best for you to stick to drinking bottled water, but that is not the case. There is no evidence that bottled water is any healthier to drink than tap water. You also have to think of the impact on the environment that drinking bottled water can have. The bottles are thrown into landfill or end up in the oceans. This is not something which you would want to contribute to. You can see that it’s not a good idea to drink water direct from the tap as it can be laden with impurities. If you want to be sure of having a healthy glass of water to drink then you should invest in some form of water purification system for your home.
